Some Common Fish Diseases & Treatment

If any of your fish show suspected signs of disease or ailment, remove them from the main tank as soon as possible to a hospital tank for monitoring and treatment.

Fungus Probably the most common condition to affect goldfish and tropical fish in the aquarium. White or grey cotton wool like tufts can appear on the body of the fish. Treatment can be either keeping the fish in salt water (1oz to 1gallon or 25g to 4.5ltrs) or medication like Novalek Rid Fungus

Fin rot This condition, if it has occured since you acquired the fish, may suggest the need for more frequent water changes, warmer conditions or a better, more varied diet. Treatment is generally the same as above.

Whitespot Although not very common with coldwater fish, it can be fatal if not treated quickly. The tell-tale signs are if the fish is continually flicking its body against the gravel, stones or coral and displays many white raised spots on its body and fins. The parasite responsible exists in the tank environment as well as on the fish. Treatments include Methylene Blue, Chloramine T and Malachite Green Disease Treatment

Mouth rot This is a serious bacterial condition that needs treating promptly as can often prove fatal. Treatments include Simply Betta Bacteria Fungus Cure

Swim bladder problems This can be seen as erratic swimming, loss of balance and floating upside down. Sometimes caused by overfeeding or incorrect temperatures. Usually, isolating the fish without feeding for 48 hrs can be effective although in some cases, a complete remedy is not possible
